Scott Woods' major collection of poetry and first book with Brick Cave Books. Tackling subjects from race to pop culture, religion, love and beyond, Scott's raw and tenured language immediately connects with the Reader's sense of the world and Readers find themselves gently nodding in understanding and awe as you explore this book.
This is a very strong collection of poetry. From having seen Scott Woods read poetry live, I was really able to "hear" his voice which added a lot to my enjoyment. Even without that, the words speak for themselves.
I won a copy of this book through the Goodreads first-reads program, and would like to thank Scott Woods, Goodreads, Brick Cave Media and any others involved in providing me with this book.
My review:
I was so excited when this book arrived and I got to reading it immediately. Unfortunately though, I wasn't overly impressed. Whether it was because I had high expectations, because I couldn't relate to many of the topics or because I wasn't connecting with the writing style I'm not sure, but I guess there was no 'wow' factor for me which is why I have to rate it as 'ok'.
That being said, I admire the fact that Scott Woods is bringing the genre of poetry back to life for a new generation of readers. Also, I would recommend you read this collection of poems and make your own judgements.
"We Over Here Now" by Scott Woods which I won from Goodreads Giveaways is a honest look at life through the eyes of this black poet. All his poems including "the Organist" and "The Bible in 50 Haiku" are unique and creative, but I found his writing style unusual but not distasteful.
This is not a book of poetry you can feast on in one sitting , but it should be devoured over a period of time to understand the messages he's trying to convey. I hope Scott continues to convey his thoughts and emotions in such a clever and tangible way.
I won a copy of this book from Goodreads, and I wanted to thank the publisher Brick Cave books, and the Author Scott Woods. It has been a long time since I read a book of poetry, and while I did not really relate to most of the subjects in the book, a couple of the poems did give me cause to ponder. Thanks for the opportunity to read We Over Here Now, and I wish the author continued success.
Very different style of poetry. This was a goodreads give away. I am thrilled to have received this book of poetry. Their are some very humorous poems like the Sunoco Station and Old friends for sale. If you like various styles of poems you may like this book.
