Description

Kara Nkosi is a Mariner—sworn to protect those of her blood and heart, sworn to protect the sea. Generations ago, her people escaped starvation and oppression on stolen boats, only to find themselves in the midst of increasingly violent storms, rising waters, and international scorn.

They were up for the challenge.

Now, at the dawn of the twenty-second century, Kara’s people are approached by their age-old adversary. When an ambassador from the United States begs the Mariners for help recovering a cache of unstable weapons of mass destruction, her people are naturally suspicious, but the threat of such weapons being unleashed in their waters is too great to ignore.

Only, the Mariners aren’t the only ones racing to recover the cache, and Kara and her shipmates find themselves pitted against powerful corporate mercenaries and hardened criminals, all in the name of helping their sworn enemy. An enemy who may not be telling them the whole truth.

Excerpt

Excerpt-

“We’ve been discussing options, Lieutenant. That’s come up already. If we go this alone, what happens when we find this undersea bunker of theirs? We have no idea what automated defenses are waiting, or how to stabilize the containment systems. Even if we did, do we really want to be in possession of WMDs, anyway? That would be just the excuse the U.S. would need to invade us again. This time with international support. No, if we decide to do this, we have to do it with them.”

“Bah!” Mayer spat at the admiral. “I’ve heard enough of this. Trespassers at our doorsteps, threatening to overrun us at any moment, and this is what we spend our time debating?”

“Fortunately,” Elect Shostakovich said, “this decision isn’t yours alone to make. This is serious, Emeritus. If their story is even half true, we could be looking at an ecological catastrophe that would destroy our people, not to mention the damage it would do to the ocean and the world. If you’re so concerned about what our ancestors would have done, do you really think they’d let a threat like this go by without at least investigating it?”
