"This book is for all the people who stuck by my side through my years of trying to convince them to leave. It's dedicated to the people who propped me up instead of pulling me down. It's meant for all the people who helped shape me into who I am."

Description
My Identity as a Stereotypical Side Character was composed as a double-sided book or tête-bêche. The style has been previously seen in science fiction and children’s works and in stories where two view-points are often placed side-by-side. In this work, the composition is meant to evoke the duality of the poet.My Identity as a Stereotypical Side Character and Cold Sodas contain non-contiguous line drawings intended to represent how the decisions of our past paint the course of our present and shape our future. The work is in black and white to reflect the duality of the author.
Cold Sodas
Cold Sodas, the back portion of My Identity as a Stereotypical Side Character, explores the artist as a side character in the lives of others. This collection of stories weaves the personal with the public and the flippant with the poignant through meaningful gleanings taken from some of life’s mundane events.
Excerpt
Air Drums
“Drink less energy drinks.
Chemicals are not nourishment.
Carcinogens caused nodes in your chest.”
Mother tells me she has breast cancer.
“We should probably drinks less energy drinks.
Apparently they’re hard on your heart.”
Rituals have a way of holding
on to their vice like cold
cans of tin chemo. I can’t sit still
during the day after hearing
that our morning ritual hurt you. I had no clue
our caffeinated commute, and air drums
of Run to the Hills, would lead to a fight
no-one could run from. There are no breaks,
no drum solos for reprieve. No drop-offs
at school shouting, “Hey boo boo!”
on Freshman Friday. Just me, dropping
her off for the first treatment,
realizing I don’t have it in me
to watch my mother die
because we can’t drink energy drinks anymore.
